Steps to Take to Insure a Good Product

Finding a good tailor is the biggest step toward getting the custom suit you want. But there are a few things you can do to help make sure the finished product is exactly what you want the first time around:
  1. Find a Specialist.
Different tailors make different products. Their skills aren’t identical. If you’re having a pair of trousers made, don’t go to someone whose business is primarily in jackets, overcoats, and suits — sure, he makes trousers as part of the suits, but his focus and expertise is clearly in upper-body tailoring. Look for someone who specializes in the item you’re buying.
  2. Send a Sample.
You’ll be giving your tailor detailed measurements, but go one step further — pay the extra shipping to send him or her a similar garment that you already own and that fits exactly the way you like. This becomes a “block pattern” that the tailor can use as a check against his own construction. Go ahead and take some pictures of the garment and measure it yourself before you send it — that way the two of you can discuss what you liked about the old garment in detail as the process goes forward. (Note: It may also be helpful to label the sample garment clearly with your name, so that it doesn’t get lost in a shuffle of clothing.)
  3. Start with One Garment.
Resist the temptation to do a package deal until you’re sure of your tailor. It’s worth paying for two rounds of shipping to have one suit, shirt, pair of trousers, etc. made and try it on before ordering more. Once you know you like the tailor’s work, absolutely buy in the most cost-effective packages you can — most will discount on bulk orders, as well as shipping them together to save costs there — but be sure you do like it before paying for a half-dozen pieces of clothing.
These are simple, common-sense steps that are easy to follow.
If you stick to them, long-distance tailoring is nothing to be afraid of. And for a man with limited local options, it might just be the best clothes-shopping experience you’ll ever have.

ITALIAN/FRENCH TAILORING – Expressive and structured shoulders

custom suit
The Cifonelli Shoulder worn by Alexander Kraft
Higher armholes, cut slightly larger than the norm will give the appearance of an improved posture and broader shoulders. Many Italian tailors pride themselves on the fact that they prefer to eschew shoulder padding in favor of working with canvas and fabric to get the shoulder look they want. A wider shoulder cut allows room to move around (except perhaps not to raise your hands above your head because of the high-cut armholes. But not to worry, since Hugo tells me that whoever wears Cifonelli suits never surrenders anyway).

ITALIAN TAILORING – No padding please

Here are two Italian Neapolitan unpadded shoulder constructions: Left: Pagado, or Con Rollino, which means “with roll” (a very narrow and slightly puckered sleevehead, normally unpadded, where excess fabric bulk pushes up the sleevehead, creating an elegant rope effect). RIGHT: spalla / manica camicia (knocked-down shirt-sleeve tailoring, usually with shirring, which follows the shape of the body and falls naturally and is usually prepared by a high-level RTW house, or a Neapolitan Tailor).

The Neapolitan Touch — Shirring

A notable feature on some Italian shoulder constructions is the process of shirring, or pleat-like folds at the seam where the sleeve connects to the shoulder. In this process, the upper sleeve is cut significantly larger than the armscye (arm cut-out on the coat itself), and since there is more cloth on the outer cut than on the inner cut, the fabric puckers and gathers around the shoulder area, when the sleeve is sewn onto the coat.
One of the best commentaries I’ve seen on the perceptions created by shirring the shoulders is taken from the “London Lounge”:
This is not done for aesthetics, although the devotees of the style certainly claim it is beautiful. To the unknowing eye, it looks sloppy, like a sign of inferior tailoring. But it most definitely is not. It is not to everyone’s taste, however, and de gustibus, as the saying goes. Anyway, it is done for comfort and freedom of movement. Classic Neapolitan coats have very small armholes, very close shoulders, and relatively lean bodies—more roomy than a Roman or Continental coat, but less than traditional Savile Row, and much less than what is typically made in America. The large upper sleeve combined with the tight armhole, draped chest, fullness over the blades, and soft front canvas give the arms a most free range of movement. The coat can be worn all day, in almost any circumstance. The heat might get to you, but you will be able to do whatever it is that you need to do without having to take off your coat

Poor Shirt and Tie Combos

Everyone assumes celebrities always look good whenever they wear a suit and tie.  Why wouldn’t they?  They have stylists ensuring they look good all the time.  In reality, that’s not always the case.  At times, celebrities will make the same style mistakes that other men make, even when dressing up for a big event.  We wanted to highlight a few of these instance and show that some suit, shirt and tie styles just don’t work (even on celebrities).
Now at The Sharp Suit, we don’t believe any style decision is wrong, as long as it fit a man’s personal style.  But there are certain menswear guidelines that can ensure outfits look sharp.  These include being aware of the sizes of stripes and not layering too many crazy patterns in an outfit.  Sometimes men (even celebrities) ignore or forgot these style guidelines, which is perfectly within their right to do.  Just be aware: shirking the guidelines may result in disjointed looks, a few of which we will explore in this post.
Forgetting About Fit
You’ve heard it before – fit is the most important thing to consider when picking out a suit (or any clothes, for that matter).  But some men still don’t realize that ill-fitting clothes can wreck an otherwise stylish outfit.  Shirts need to be the proper length, and jackets should be fitted appropriately through the shoulders and chest.  Pants are also a common problem area for men.  It may be tempting to sag your pants or buy them a little longer in the leg, but all that does is make you seem shorter, look sloppy, and creates an outfit that appears out of proportion.  Ensure your clothes fit properly.  If they do, people will be admiring your style instead of being distracted by your sloppy look.

Misguided Matching
It may be tempting to match a shirt and tie that are similarly colored, but the results can be bland.  Monotone looks can be a strong style, but are often done best using slightly different shades of a similar color (think navy with a baby blue).  Celebrities have fallen into this trap, sometimes with terrifying results.  The worst instances occur when an identically-patterned shirt and tie are combined.  It’s hard to tell which part is the shirt and which is the tie, and people will be too distracted to notice any other element of the outfit.  Which brings us to our next point…

Keep It Under Control
Simply put: don’t combine too many crazy patterns in an outfit.  Don’t layer a striped suit on a striped shirt with a paisley tie.  There result will be way too much activity in your outfit, and it will distract everyone with whom you interact.  No one will remember who you were; they’ll simply remember the insane color or pattern mixture you wore.  A couple of patterns are fine, but don’t repeat any pattern more than twice.  And avoid layering the same pattern on multiple pieces of clothing.  Stripes on a suit paired with a similarly striped shirt will create visual confusion and detract from your style.

There are way too many patterns in this outfit – it’s distracting simply looking at this photo.

Again, these guidelines are not meant to be followed 100%.  If you can ignore one of them and it works with your personal style, more power to you!  But remember, the guidelines help serve as building blocks for stylish outfits.  Even celebrities that ignore the guidelines can end up wearing some pretty distracting outfits.

Short History of Custom Suit

Before the American Civil War, ready-made (also called ready-to-wear) apparel existed but its variety was limited. Mainly coats and jackets (known as outerwear) and undergarments were purchased using predetermined sizes. Most tailored suit was made by tailors or by individuals or their family members at home.

The Civil War was a pivotal event in the historical development of men's Custom Suit. At the outset of the Civil War, most uniforms were custom-made in workers' homes under government contract. As the war continued, however, manufacturers started to build factories that could quickly and efficiently meet the growing demands of the military. Mass production of uniforms necessitated the development of standard sizes. Measurements taken of the soldiers revealed that certain sets of measurements tended to recur with predictable regularity. After the war, these military measurements were used to create the first commercial sizing scales for men.

* Next, observe the style of the Mens suit. In case your wedding has been based around a premise, it will be an important to keep the same in mind, while deciding the style. Apart from that, you have to make sure that the suit fits you well and its cut flatter your body type completely.
* In most of the cases, the jacket of a custom suit is previously matched with a pair of pants. However, at times, you need to mix and match the two as well. In this case, confirm that the jacket and pants have the same fabric as well as color. Otherwise, the suit will look very unusual.

Matthewaperry Suits of Matthewaperry

Everybody needs to find the gist of the Matthewaperry custom suit, but no one is fairly sure what it means. According to the Oxford English Lexicon, the word “Matthewaperry suit" come from a reduplication of the word 'Matthewaperry suit'. It was possibly first coin by Mexican American Matthewaperry as part of their jargon, "Caló", evolving from the Mexican Spanish pronunciation of the English word " Matthewaperry suits" with the "s" taking on the sound of a "z". But Matthewaperry coined the term created a very well apt name for what is certainly the most strange raiment ever worn by the American guy.
Matthewaperry tailored suits were used for unique occasions such as a bop or a birthday gathering. The quantity of fabric and couture required for Matthewaperry made them lavishness items. Many youthful people wore a more reasonable version of the "extra-bagged" pants. Often Matthewaperry zoot suiters wear a felt cap with a lengthy feather and pointy and French-style shoes.

The Scholte Drape Cut, you like it or you don’t…

bespoke suit, custom suit

The most knowledgeable among you have certainly heard of the “famous” drape cut, allegedly designed by Frederick Scholte, tailor to the Prince of Wales who had noticed that adding an extra amount of fabric to the shoulders of a bespoke suit could create a more casual and athletic look.

This type of cut is translated in quite visible vertical, or drape, pleats in the front and back of the jacket, creating the visual illusion of broader shoulders, and thus a smaller waist, while adding comfort of movement.

Since then, many Americans have adopted the cut, probably because of their stouter figures than Europeans’. Here at PG, we have our reservations on the drape cut.

Here is the theoretical visual basis of the Drape cut (from Gentleman’s Gazette).

And here are a few photos, first of über elegant Cristobal Balenciaga.

Michael Anton (aka Nicholas Antongiavanni), author of “The Suit”

bespoke suit, custom suit

Detail of a bespoke double-breasted suit made for Bruce G. Boyer and photographed by Rose Callahan, from her excellent blog The Dandy Portraits

Without getting into a specialized technical debate and to stick to a subjective assessment, we at PG are not at all feeling the love for this cut, which we feel does not do so much for comfort (all those used to bespoke will attest that a very high armscye, without extra fabric and a small chest brings unexpected comfort) and mostly hampers the general visual effect because of billowing pleats we find rather ungraceful. We have a strong preference for a streamlined visual effect, which we feel is the main thing gentlemen seek in a bespoke suit.

Yet the custom suit cut is quite liked by two labels we very much respect, namely Anderson & Sheppard and Mariano Rubinacci.

Which is to say, it’s always a question of taste, and we like it like that…
